Statistical significance: The findings of a study may be due to chance. A statistical test can determine the likelihood or probability that the results reflect a true effect. A common statistical test provides a p value (probability). If the p value is, for example, less than (<) 0.05, then there is less than a five percent chance that the result is due to chance.
